Occupational Therapy

What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy uses meaningful activities (occupations) and routines to promote and maximise independence. A occupational therapist may provide assessment and treatment within the physical, cognitive and psycho-social domains looking at areas such as self care, work and leisure. An occupational therapist works on optimising a persons functional  potential and quality of life.

Occupational therapy and neuro-rehabilitation:

Following a brain injury an occupational therapist can work with you to regain fulfilment in previous life roles and daily tasks. These may range from washing your face or using your hemiplegic hand to being able to return to work or your previous hobbies. Following an assessment the occupational therapist will work in conjunction with you, and if appropriate your family, to discuss realistic goals using a practical goal orientated approach to strive to achieve these. A personalised treatment programme is devised which tailors therapy to suit you in the environment which best meets your needs. Occupational therapy can be provided in the clinic setting, in your home or out in the community.

Occupational therapists will use a variety of approaches in your rehabilitation. Approaches may range from looking at equipment to make life easier, visual strategies to help you remember, remedial or functional activities to improve cognitive or physical functioning and education and advice around brain injury.
